Tories overstated net zero cost by nearly £500bn after spreadsheet error
Tories overstate net zero cost by nearly £500bn in apparent spreadsheet error. Same error amplified by right-wing think-tanks, press It suited their ideological leanings. Future historians might say - planet earth and human life was shattered by a spreadsheet error.
Wasn't Cameron's and Osborne's austerity based on a similar error? Nothing adds up with these jokers.
So .... the party of safe money can't add up or use Excel ..... mmmmmmmm !
TBF, they've got form with this The error that could subvert George Osborne's austerity programme | George Osborne | The Guardian share.google/wvJy0uAZi7JQ...
Spreadsheets, greed, psychopathy and don’t give a shit as long as the rich don’t pay taxes…
Their ignorance on climate collapse will cost them every election going forward. They are doomed.
The cost of unmitigated climate change to the country is of course much, much, more than even their silly made up number.
It wasn't a spreadsheet error. It was an ideological enthusiasm for a spreadsheet error that amounted to a useful lie. Useful until you've killed the planet and undermined your own future.
George Osborne made a serious ‘error’ when reading figures which directly led to Tory Austerity on steroids. Question is - are these deliberate mistakes or just an excuse to do real harm on behalf of the far right & the fossil fuel lobby? The rich always get richer under Tories, the poor - poorer.
Yet Diane Abbott’s miscalculation over police numbers has been used to belittle her, for the last ten years.
Why do people still vote for these idiots who don’t check documents before they’re sent out? The Tories and their mediathink tank fan club should be forced to correct the record with a main article/main story etc. Why are there no standards governing mistakes and lying?
Arguably, Badenoch is herself a prime example of a spreadsheet error...
there is a theme here austerity was a spreadsheet error too why isn’t massive political incompetence like this punished? surely this was misconduct in public office www.thelondoneconomic.com/lifestyle/ge...
One person's "spreadsheet error" is another fascist's big lie. Think that's hyperbole?
A 'Spreadsheet' error or a deliberate act to mislead the electorate?? It's the #Tories, so it's deliberate.
It should be a criminal offence for politicians, especially MPs, to lie. And some consequence for "errors" of such magnitude when those who fail to do due diligence & publicise such errors as facts are funded by the public purse. Same consequences as most employed people who f*** up in a job face.
Kemi Badenoch’s flagship party conference policy document overestimated the cost of net zero by nearly £500bn… …seemingly after someone accidentally double-counted figures on a spreadsheet. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
So much for the party who continually tell us about their superior fiscal competence.
A once in a lifetime error. Oh..... 🤨 www.theguardian.com/politics/201...
Careless Kemi’s Tory party is littered with errors, overstating net zero or understating the cost of a British Iron Dome, which she has to walk back while claiming she never gets anything wrong. A self deluded politician is a dangerous thing.
Conservative headline for cost of Net Zero £957b, actual cost £4b per annum. And even that should be regarded as an investment in future energy savings and reducing the likelihood and impact of climate disasters. Net Zero is a sensible and economically rational idea.
As funny as this is, at this point cost is becoming very obviously less important than action and the loons are looking increasingly loony..
Shows how incompetent the Tories are
Not an error. The Tories, like Reform just quote made up figures to suit their agenda safe in the knowledge that their followers will not question them nor listen to the “corrections”.
Oh look. Spectacularly incompetent bullshit merchant lies about disastrous climate suicide "policy".
Anyway, like I was saying: bsky.app/profile/best...
Oh look, another Tory spreadsheet error that leads to disaster. I wrote a thing about that. russincheshire.substack.com/p/the-spread... www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
The Tories have got form for this (Austerity based on a spreadsheet error). Couldn't open your Substack link for some reason
Spreadsheet error nobody pucked up, or spreadsheet 'error' ( wink, wink)?
A £500bn error doesn’t just embarrass a party—it distorts the argument before policy is even debated, making climate action look vastly harder to fund than it is.
I remember. The Tories announced the spreadsheet error, apologised, and explained that their austerity policies were therefore wrong and reversed them. Oh how we laarfed, and then we went on to live happily ever after.
If this was Reform UK then expect Tricky to comment "Trifling".
I wouldn't trust them to speak my weight 😅
It would be lovely to think that on discovering an error of this magnitude it would prompt the Tories to stop and ask themselves if maybe we can afford net zero after all. Sadly, there is zero chance of that happening. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Badenoch really should be challenged on this. She recognises climate change is real so should understand net zero has to be reached. Her objection is there isn’t a sufficiently robust plan and it costs too much to reach it by 2050. But cost estimates she is using are out my an order of magnitude.
What's that, tories cooking the books...shocker 😳🤣
"She asked me for help"
Let me shock you - the Tories will double down on this number and no-one in the broadcast media will challenge them, so it will become an established truth rather than the lie that it is.
I've had a newsworthy piece of climate research spiked x5 TIMES this year by broadcasters, despite meticulous research into the localised impact of climate change on poorer working class communities, in a particular region of the UK . But climate sceptic comms get a free pass. Our media is a joke.
The level of incompetence among people *in general* is absolutely mind boggling. I just can’t really understand why everyone is so fucking incompetent
That’s 50x the money ”lost” on the RBS/NatWest bailout.
Conservatives double the cost of net zero with spreadsheet error. Spiky comment from the Climate Change Committee, whose estimates they messed up www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
So much for the Tories' claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility. They can't even read a finacial spreadsheet.
Even if correct it would still be a wise investment economically. It would soon pay for itself many times over with cheaper energy. May even be worth it for immediate jobs alone.
to be fair, I've once nearly done this with a report for the UN, but my error was less than $1 billion (I'm still wincing though, decades later — and nobody noticed it in the draft, which was additionally worrying)
But she's an engineer ...... 🙄
Guardian : 'It is possible the Conservatives copied the figure without checking it. It appears to have been published in a report by the rightwing thinktank the Institute of Economic Affairs...' "Think"tank unaware of risks of using spreadsheets for critical stuff requiring software validation.🤣
Material wealth and currency cannot sustain human life once the natural ecosystems providing air, water, and food are destroyed. The Tories are desperately trying to accomplish this.
Funny how these errors always seem to head in the same direction. A bit like Richard Tice's tax mistakes.
The figure came from the IEA, to the surprise of no one
This plus the IHT thing…hmm. Who’s in charge of the CRD these days?
Standard levels of competence from the party that fucked the UK for 14yrs.
Oh @mrjamesob.bsky.social NB: 'It is possible the Conservatives copied the figure without checking it. It appears to have been published in a report by the rightwing thinktank the Institute of Economic Affairs and also included in an article in the Spectator.'
The party of business and sound financial management? Give me a break Badenoch pamphlet seems to have made this ridiculous claim about net zero delivery by copying am erroneous spreadsheet from one of the right-wing junktanks www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Oh yeah, and in addition to doing the maths wrong, they used a Climate Change Committee report from 2020. But the numbers were updated (and much smaller) in their 2025 report So the numbers are both out-of-date and wrong Can you imagine what it'd be like if they ran the Treasury?
Their own record proves conclusively how this is not the case If they were even mildly competent then after 14 years in power, the country would not have been broken and broke They did that
I see not much has changed since Liz Truss. 🤣 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Listening to the party of destruction promising to fix everything they’ve broken would be funny if it wasn’t so damned annoying.
I just can't do anymore Tories after the 15 years of ripping the country to shreds and impoverishing us. The fact that there are still poor people who think this party will improve their lot is astounding.
Could we get through a week without a Badenoch gaffe?
I was thinking that when I heard it. I think they can only promise £80bn from cutting welfare benefits in the knowledge that they are so pisspoor that they will never get elected to implement these Draconian cuts.
www.theguardian.com/politics/202... The Tories: either innumerate or plagiarists, probably both. The figure in error was also made up by the IEA and the Spectator. Either way, the Tories cannot be trusted with the economy ....
Morning Andy - they have form on errors of this magnitude bsky.app/profile/did:...
Watched kemi on this issue Shes relying on someone who knows the numbers but she doesnt mmmm nor can she answer the questions asked of her Off around the Mulberry Bush she goes where she stops she only knows 🙄 Woman isnt for thinking 🙄
The Tories cannot be trusted to tell the time.
Sure, an error and not a big lie.
Was she saying "accidentally" at the moment that this picture was taken?
Would leave anyone of them in charge if a running bath
