Tropical Depression Nine forms in Gulf, could reach Category 2 at landfall

Tropical Depression Nine formed in the southwest Gulf of Mexico and the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday afternoon it is likely to strengthen rapidly and make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane. The NHC’s 4 p.m. advisory showed the system moving east before turning north later in the week and accelerating toward a Gulf Coast landfall overnight Friday into Saturday. Forecaster John Cangialosi said there is significant uncertainty about where the system makes its northeast turn and how fast it moves, and that a stronger storm will likely move faster toward the coast. The depression has 35 mph winds now but is forecast to become a tropical storm early Wednesday and a hurricane by Thursday, with peak winds near 100 mph before landfall. The NHC said the system is compact, which favors rapid strengthening, and its 4 p.m. cone includes a potential landfall zone between southeastern Louisiana and the Florida panhandle, with New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast inside the cone. Forecasters warned of heavy rainfall, coastal flooding and gusty winds for the Gulf Coast; if it becomes a named storm it would be called Isaias.
