Jim Bakker, cofounder of the PTL Club television ministry who rose to fame alongside his then-wife Tammy Faye, has died at 86. Bakker built a large evangelical television empire with The PTL Club before an affair with a young church secretary and investigations into PTL’s finances led to his downfall. In 1988 Bakker was indicted on mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy charges, was convicted, and received a federal sentence that was originally 45 years and later reduced; he served years in prison before returning to public life. In later decades Bakker marketed survivalist food buckets and other products, drawing renewed criticism for promoting fear-driven fundraising. Major news outlets including the New York Times and Deadline have published obituaries noting his rise, scandal, conviction, and later activities, and local reporting traced his legal and public trajectory from televangelist to convicted fraudster.
