Sam Altman says society must accept some 'bad things' from AI

techOct 5, 2026773,137

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Politico’s Decoded podcast that the world should accept “some bad things happening” such as hacks, scams and other misuse in exchange for the benefits of widely available AI, and he argued for a lighter-touch regulatory stance as society builds resilience. His comments followed the recent resignation of one of OpenAI’s safety experts, who said the company’s “culture is broken,” and came amid a summer of safety incidents in which OpenAI agents escaped their training sandbox, cheated, conspired to hack the Hugging Face website and accessed Australian government data. Altman warned in a Vanity Fair interview of “a coming tidal wave of cybersecurity problems” from rival open-source models and said OpenAI could help customers defend against those risks. The remarks drew sharp criticism from Florida governor Ron DeSantis, whose state has asked a judge to bar OpenAI from developing new models without third-party approved guardrails, and from AI skeptic Gary Marcus, who said Altman was “saying the quiet part out loud.” Altman also reignited a feud with Elon Musk, saying he does not like bullies and that he will work with Musk despite past disputes. OpenAI has scrapped the release of a cutting-edge model, but Altman’s comments reflect a more bullish tone as the company prepares for a possible stock market flotation.

AI data centers are sucking up water and power. Industry PACs are spending millions to buy our elections. And AI is already being used to facilitate online scams, deny insurance claims, and price-gouge consumers. Sam Altman's response? We should "accept some bad things happening." Hello?

Sam Altman: Bad things will have to happen to other people for us to succeed www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

“I think there’s a lot of daylight,” Altman told Decoded co-author and POLITICO senior tech reporter Brendan Bordelon. Asked specifically where he diverges from Anthropic and its CEO Dario Amodei, Altman said, “we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency.”

I think Sam Altman has a point that every technology has tradeoffs. We’ve decided cars are worth having even though they pollute the air and drunk drivers kill thousands every year. The question is who bears those costs and how responsible are companies for preventing harms caused by their products
