Dennis Hastert dies at 84, remembered for child sexual abuse scandal

newsOct 5, 2026739,407

Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House, has died at 84. He admitted in 2016 to sexually abusing teenage boys decades earlier and later pleaded guilty to federal banking charges tied to payments intended to conceal that abuse; he served a prison term. A federal judge described Hastert as a “serial child molester” during the legal proceedings. Hastert’s death prompted sharp criticism of media obituaries, with commentators accusing outlets including Fox News and CBS of downplaying his abuse and calling for his legacy to be defined by the admitted sexual crimes rather than his tenure in Congress. News coverage and social-media posts repeatedly noted that Hastert was the highest-ranking U.S. official known to have served jail time for wrongdoing related to the case. The reporting emphasizes both his long political career and the criminal admissions and sentence that came late in his life.

Truly incredible that this is how the media is choosing to eulogize the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House in US history, who was a serial sexual abuser of children. For all the talk about "deep state" plots to abuse children, no one even remembers this case.

From CBS News: "Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who represented Illinois for two decades in Congress and was later jailed for violating banking laws, has died."

It sounds weird, but politicians who violated 'banking laws' were once considered 'disgraced'. No becoming president, no running key House committees, no pardons, if you were caught violating 'banking laws' your career was over and the headlines would call you 'disgraced.' I wonder what changed.

Dennis Hastert? The former House Speaker who was jailed for violating banking laws?

In a way, it's useful to be reminded that Hastert's abuses became known b/c the W Bush-era FBI noticed he was "violating banking laws." Is there any chance that if Kash Patel's FBI spotted Mike Johnson or another Trump loyalist rep making fishy transactions that they would follow that lead?

Angry goose meme asks Jailed for violating banking laws for which purpose, CBS?!

GregSergienko5

Yes. For those not around then, the "violating banking laws" that CBS mentions happened because he was paying large amounts of cash to cover up his sex crimes against children.

Never has there been a more "rest in piss" man

Pedophiles don't need a deep state to protect them. The regular state and journalists do it just fine without being asked.

Dennis Hastert molested at least four boys while he was a teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in the Chicago suburb where he worked from 1965 to 1981. bsky.app/profile/joel...

Fox News gave Dennis Hastert, whom a federal judge called a “serial child molester,” a warm “In Memoriam” sendoff.

The Bari Weiss-ification of CBS News continues. Dennis Hastert was convicted of the sexual abuse of high school students under his supervision as a high school wrestling coach. Banking rules violations were his transfers of hush money payments which he misdescribed and which allowed
