Bangkok floods declared disaster as 40 people die

Thailand declared a flood disaster across all 50 Bangkok districts after roughly 40 people died and whole neighbourhoods became stagnant lakes. About 300 mm of rain fell in roughly two days in parts of the city, the equivalent of half a year of average London rainfall, and thousands sheltered in more than 230 temporary centres. Several deaths were from drowning and others from accidental electrocution. Residents such as 73-year-old Suleemas Kurangkul described nonstop rain that left street-level water waist-high and turned the 1970s Khlong Chan flat complex into a visible symbol of the crisis. Built on the Chao Phraya floodplain, Bangkok’s canals, pumps and dikes were overwhelmed after decades of concrete development reduced drainage capacity. The floods disrupted Suvarnabhumi airport operations, left many Thai Airways staff unable to reach work and forced school closures and citywide gridlock. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said water flowing in from the north still posed a risk and officials set up a war room as experts warned extreme flooding across south-east Asia is likely to worsen.
