Manchester City to appeal guilty Premier League verdict, faces potential £800m bill
I’ve never seen a BBC correspondent try to build such a huge mountain out of such a tiny molehill. Chris Mason’s hysterical quest to undermine Andy Burnham, based on a few noncommittal words: Chris Mason: Why Andy Burnham's about-turn on Manchester City matters www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
If I had only one word to desribe Chris Mason 'hysterical' would indeed be it. Every bloody night he over-emotes over some utter nothing of a story, like a pimped up cross between Uriah Heep & Wilkins Micawber. Thank god the BBC is about to get involved in a round of brutal cuts. One can only hope
Mason is terrible (obviously) but I do think it fair and incumbent on journalists to probe and ask questions about Burnham's time in Manchester when he embraced the sports-washing by Abu Dhabi via the state-owned football club at the heart of the city.
You haven't been paying attention then, this is the sort of claptrap Starmer was subjected to daily, usually based on unnamed sources. It was an ill advised remark by Burnham which he later clarified.
The TV licence fee is £180. It takes over 3,800 of us to pay Mason's and Kuennsberg's salaries, and that excludes overheads.
Were you asleep during the Corbyn years?
Pretty much sums up why I've stopped watching/reading BBC news
“Emirati officials have warned the UK Government that the severity of the ruling against Manchester City could impact the UAE’s appetite for future major investment and commitments in Britain” But City fans insist they aren’t state owned, what a joke!!
Fuck them right off. Corrupt tinpot little place. Who cares. Just get back into Europe
Not state owned, so why does the Emerati officials try to blackmail the UK? 🤔
They are throwing billions into the black hole thst is football for this very precise reason. They buy influence and leverage. If it was for me F*%k right off they go.
They've clearly had the country's bollocks in the palm of their hand for quite some time now. With a less than subtle threat that they're more than happy to grip a little tighter, if we don't play ball with them.
Tell the arabs to fuck off. Like we should everytime the lock someone up for nothing.
if they don’t invest, some other despots with nasty human rights records will fill the gap, why would we worry? Let’s call their bluff.
Does this mean that the UAE will not invest in Britain unless they can break the rules and, potentially, the law?
The state ownership keeps revealing itself. Also, it’s a bluff.
I think I’ve got this right. Man City are not state owned or state funded, except they are state funded through sponsorship, but also are not state funded. The state has no involvement in Man City, while simultaneously being involved in Man City. Seems clear
Awkward! 🙈 Man City are arguing the sponsorship money came from the Abu Dhabi government rather than their owners. In 2015, Etihad told the US government the Abu Dhabi government did NOT pay for its Man City sponsorship - Etihad said it funded it from its own liquidity. You couldn’t make it up. 💀
The receipts were already in the filing cabinet. The web of lies is getting very tangled. 🕸️💀
They are hoping the definition is enough to trigger a retrial or whatever you’d call this type of hearing, and waste another 3 years
Yeah it’s bollox.. there’s a reason it was declared as sponsorship payments and not from the Abu Dhabi government
Someone is gonna get their hands chopped off for all this
You can make it up and the crooked bastards did.
You'd think that somewhere, someone with a brain would be whispering in to Man City's ear... "for christs sake shut the fuck up! Why did you even say that?"
We conducted a very thorough survey and asked people — "Will they care if this version of Manchester City is expelled from the Football pyramid?"
As an Evertonian I do feel for the proper longstanding Man City fans, it's not their fault. As ever the blame lies with the greedy rich who never face punishment because of their wealth.
I want them kicked out of the league and the whole pyramid. I want them so far from the football pyramid, that they're not even in the football Egypt any more. They denied honest footballers so many victories. Denied honest fans so much happiness. They corrupted every kid you see in a city top 🤮
I think care is the wrong word. Will we support their expulsion? Yes. Will we be happy if they are expelled? See previous answer.
True. If there's one word that sums up most football fans' feelings towards Man City and PSG, it's apathy. As heartbreaking as it is for the fans and players, the owners really do have to accept they were guilty, not go full Donald Trump/Nigel Farage and pretend otherwise.
From Etihad's "RESPONSE TO CLAIMS RAISED ABOUT STATE-OWNED AIRLINES" filed with the US gov. in 2015. "The assertion that the Abu Dhabi government paid for Etihad’s sponsorship of English Premier League football club Manchester City is [...] false".
I believe it is David Conn of the @theguardian.com who first unearthed this document (still downloadable from the US government's website), back in 2020.
The problem with lying so much, is remembering which lie you told, to whom and when.
How are City supposed to get away with this if pesky journalists keep finding contradictory past statements?
This is just outstanding work Phillippe, from both you and David. Thanks for keeping us all up to date (and probably ahead of most) on this.
Philippe, maybe I'm daft and missing something, but I can't see how the City defence stands up? I mean, even putting to one side how the Abu Dhabi govt and associated City-related 'businesses' are essentially linked, surely huge sums from a foreign govt topping up 'sponsorship' is a bit suspect?
Would you mind just forwarding this to the appeal guys? Thanks a bunch.
bsky.app/profile/phil... I think this might come back to bite them
This is the final hammer blow for any hope for City in succeeding on appeal, btw. Obviously new evidence can’t be introduced for an appeal, but it’s clear that it’s going to be pretty much impossible to show that the commission’s factual findings were unlawful bsky.app/profile/phil...
“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!”
Looking at details in Man City verdict, other cases and leaked emails, it’s astonishing how brazen and straightforward this scheme was without anyone at the PL noticing. It took a computer hack and then leaks to bring it out into open. The oversight clearly couldn’t discover such an obvious scheme.
Same goes for the Chelsea years of cheating under Abramovich, which Chelsea are very lucky to get away with a light touch penalty because the new owners brought it up (which they legally were required to do). Taken together about 20 years+ of cheating under league’s nose. 13 PL titles between them
I'm sure other clubs *did* notice though. If you're involved in securing sponsorship deals and finance at a club, you'd have looked at Man City and known the numbers were dodgy. But almost impossible to prove without *those* emails.
Other thing surely is that this whole case is based upon a certain 9 year period from several years ago.....what has been happening in more recent years? How can those figures be suddenly trustworthy?!
There's also the more cynical view that they knew about it but let it go on for business reasons
I think questions need to be asked of Richard Masters and those at the top of the game as soon as.
Basically checking if records were formally complete and came out on the required sum, not if they were true.
The fact the Treasury select committee chair has asked HMRC to investigate potential tax evasion at Man City shouldn’t be a surprise. The surprise should be that HMRC hasn’t already started an investigation. The grounds for one have been in public domain since 2018. www.nytimes.com/athletic/764...
I, for one, cannot imagine City being the only team having broken financing rules in the Premier League, or even across Europe…
We need to make the punishment more severe than the crime. If people are actually held to account, they'll think twice before they act. I propose a no-judge-can-impose-otherwise mandatory fine that doubles what they've misappropriated. Maybe then they'll reconsider stealing.
It's bonkers...methinks HMRC know when they start their eventual investigations 🔎...it'll be a Pandora's box and there will no hope at the bottom 🤪
Get the feeling that HMRC spend the majority of their time taxing pensioners, getting it wrong, over taxing, under taxing, and ignoring the double irish with dutch sandwiches, for multinationals and billionaires!
I like my football teams with chairpersons who don’t have diplomatic immunity.
I don't know what HMRC does all day, but they are very lax on collecting tax from corporations and the rich.
this is not going to happen. it’s outlandish and insane. consider it less a workable solution and more a statement of principles. in that spirit: I present the case for nationalising manchester city www.theguardian.com/football/202...
Tbf Jonny, they’re already nationalised. But just by another nation.
But not the one with the bottle. Fuck that guy.
Get Lisa Nandy in until the end of the season.
No one knows what is going to be the punishment. But everyone agrees it should be severe because the scale of cheating and refusal to cooperate.
If City fans are proper fans than they'll be City fans when they're in League 2 or wherever. Every moment of ecstasy they had was stolen from fans of other clubs, who got a moment of despair instead. City cannot be allowed to continue to profit from their past misdeeds. Their current status was ...
The best way to punish City would be for Abu Dhabi to be kicked out and replaced by The Glazer Family purchasimg the club via a leveraged buyout!!!!!
Why haven’t Manchester City had their punishment before an appeal is heard? Every other club that has had a points deduction/fine etc has had this BEFORE the clubs appeal?
Cause the Premier League is a farce, run to make more and more money. Only the clubs that don't matter get a immediate points deduction, we are dispensable.
Because it’s Manchester City and they seem to get away with everything? 🤷🤬
Nothing major will happen. The PL won't turn off that Saudi money tap.
Because big money talks Mimi, and out Teams did nit have that much big money.
Because their UAE puppet masters say so
Mason's glee is a tad distasteful, but he's not wrong. Burnham's comments were dozy & revealed that - when caught off guard - he's nor the great 'communicator' his fans claim Football is being ripped apart & his 'but the City owners are great!' & 'whatabout Everton?' was plain moronic
To me it illustrates how narrow his view is on wide issues. He only sees what affects him
He spoke like a man who didn’t know they’d been found guilty of 119 breaches of the rules (and worse?) by an independent body. Shocking from a PM.
A non story, and typical BBC News output. Used by the Uriah Mason to deflect from the much bigger issues Burnham addressed at the conference.
Correct; he of all people should defer comment until the due process is completed.
Well gosh who knew eh, he isn't the Messiah either.
It was a misstep and he shouldn't have compared it to Everton but Mason is making a scandal about a non story. I couldn't care less, full disclosure here, I support Man U.
From the sheer scale of the dishonesty to Djibril Cisse offering out Mike Dean and a 5Live caller comparing Manchester City to the Suffragette movement, it has been quite a week. Here are 27 things that fried my brain, and why... inews.co.uk/sport/footba...
That caller went on to say it was a modern-day Peterloo Massacre. I'd say don't go giving the owners any ideas, but they've long moved past that.
The chutzpah in thinking that the sportswashing project of an authoritarian petrostate is some how standing up for the little guy 🤦♂️
No. 10) is certainly not true. There’s no way they would have “won it any way” without the cheating. It didn’t just shortcut success, it made it possible at all. And as for 19) there’s no reason why punishment has to be deferred pending appeal. They can appeal from the National League if they want.
"UAE officials caution that a negative outcome could damage improved relations with the UK, according to two people familiar with the matter." Man City's owners continue to make the case for preventing countries, heads of state or their proxies from owning clubs. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
It's perhaps worth recognising how much worse things could've been had Starmer not removed from the Independent Football Regulator legislation the Tory's requirement that ownership tests "have regard to the government's foreign and trade policy." Burnham can genuinely plead the IFR's independence.
They cannot cope psychologically with even the concept of scrutiny or accountability
