Autumn arrives as October begins

natureOct 1, 20262024,488

Photographers and travelers are marking the start of October with peak fall colors and seasonal scenes from Ireland to Canada. In Killarney, Ireland, visitors are finding orange and green leaves among small forested grounds at Killarney House and Gardens. In Canada, bright yellow, burnt orange and fiery red leaves are appearing coast to coast as days shorten; Algonquin Provincial Park and neighboring parks show a kaleidoscope from mid-September to mid-October thanks to 24 native species of deciduous trees. Vancouver’s 28 km Seaside Greenway through Stanley Park offers mild fall biking and guided tours that highlight the park’s 125-year history and temperate rainforest biodiversity. Quebec’s Parc national du Mont-Tremblant features vivid red maples and a gondola to Laurentian peaks for panoramic views, while Cape Breton’s Cabot Trail and Cape Breton Highlands National Park often peak in early to mid-October after colors begin changing in late September. Even where a dusting of snow signals seasonal change in Calgary, residents find golden foliage along the Bow River and autumn comforts like pumpkin spice lattes and local produce. Wildlife sightings tied to the season include chipmunks gathering, northern gannets, prairie rattlesnakes giving birth, golden eagles migrating, arctic foxes whitening, and deer and moose entering mating season.
