Bird of the Day, theme 'Black & White'

natureOct 1, 202624315,495

Bird of the Day is a daily community prompt asking members to post bird photos; today's main theme is Black & White with an alternate theme of Vivid. Gallery entries include monochrome portraits such as an Eastern Screech Owl and a Great Grey Owl presented in closeup black and white, and high-color submissions like a Wood Duck and a Rainbow Lorikeet showing bright, iridescent plumage. Other specific shots in the stream are a Great Blue Heron in resting mode rendered in B&W, a tricolored heron shown fishing, and a lesser violet-ear hummingbird offered for the vivid alternate. Look for classic monochrome reflections and high-contrast feather details under the hashtag #Black&White or join the alt theme with #Vivid.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay alt theme is #Vivid, any bird with bright colours. A wood duck. They are so kooky and cool looking. #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky

Beautiful duck, beautiful photo. Their heads remind me of helmets lol.

Is that a male? For mallards, only males have gorgeous colors.

Wonderful. Kooky and cool definitely sums it up.

You must have photoshopped that eye haha. There’s no such thing in the animal kingdom

🪶 My first #BirdOfTheDay post in a while... Going for @atlanticbirding.bsky.social's alt theme of #Vivid with this lesser violet-ear hummingbird. #costarica #birds #photography

A hummingbird on a horizontal branch. It is a shiny green color with aa violet patch below the eye and going back. It is posed with its body towards the camera, but its head turned to our right a bit, giving a view of its slightly curved black beak.

Fun fact: the eyes of fish-eating birds are adapted to filter out the reflections from the water, they can see right through.

Vibrant you say @atlanticbirding.bsky.social? Well, you know what's coming ... a #RainbowLorikeet of course. These vibrant beauties certainly brighten up any day. My 'feathered rainbows'. #BirdOfTheDay #Black&White: Main theme #Vivid: Alt theme #Birds #ECK #Australia

A Rainbow Lorikeet sits on a cross branch in front of a background of a green bushy tree.

The rainbow lorikeet is a vibrant parrot about 30 cm long, known for its colourful plumage, which includes a blue head and tummy, red curved beak, green wings, and an orange-yellow breast. They are highly social and energetic birds, often found in flocks, and primarily feed on nectar and pollen.

Good morning AB and a happy new month to you. Splendid shot of a Raven but I suspect it might take issue with being described as Common. "Nevermore, call me by that name, human. The consequences will be deathly." I'm sure Edgar Allan Poe wrote that. 😁
