Appeals court pauses Christa Pike execution an hour before scheduled injection

A three-judge federal appeals panel paused the execution of Christa Gail Pike about an hour before it was scheduled to proceed, ordering additional review of whether her claims of childhood sexual abuse and rape were fully considered at sentencing. Pike, now 50, was convicted alongside a boyfriend for the 1995 stabbing and beating death of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer at a Knoxville job training facility; she was 18 at the time. The execution would have been Tennessee’s first of a woman in more than 200 years. The U.S. Supreme Court had denied a request from Pike’s attorneys to halt the execution and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee denied clemency, but the Sixth Circuit said it needs more time to assess mitigating evidence. Supporters have pointed to Pike’s age, mental illness, and history of severe sexual abuse as relevant to sentencing, while Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, urged the state to carry out the lethal injection. It was not immediately clear whether Tennessee’s attorney general would seek further review or how long the delay might last.
