Verity, a Colleen Hoover adaptation directed by Michael Showalter and starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, opened this week to mixed and largely negative reviews. Critics called the film listless and a "dumb mystery," saying Showalter lacks feel for the erotic thriller tone and that the movie fails to commit to being serious or trashy. Several reviews and commentators nonetheless singled out Hathaway, Johnson and the cinematography as reasons to watch, and some viewers described the film as campy and darker than expected. Verity hits theaters Friday and is arriving amid sharp splits between critics who say it squanders its cast and others who found it fun or watchable despite tonal problems.
