EV sales double in Australia, one in four new cars electric

Australia sold an electric vehicle every 100 seconds as EV sales more than doubled year on year and now account for one in four new cars, the Electric Vehicle Council said. The EVC's 10th State of Electric Vehicles Report notes Australians now have access to nearly 200 electric models and more than 600,000 EVs are on the road. Julie Delvecchio, EVC CEO, said households are adopting EVs as a cost of living measure while Aman Gaur, the EVC's head of legal, policy and advocacy, identified suburban commuters, for example in Tarneit, west of Melbourne, as the fastest-growing buyers. Higher fuel prices after the February start of conflict with Iran and shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz contributed to the sales surge. Despite the boom, EVs still make up about 3 percent of the roughly 21 million cars on Australian roads, and the EVC warns the current pace is insufficient to meet emissions targets. Helen Rowe, transport lead at Monash University's Climateworks Centre, said maintaining momentum is necessary because hitting the 2035 goal would require about 5 million battery electric cars by the middle of the next decade. The report also flagged charging infrastructure as a bottleneck and noted diesel use in transport and freight remains high and largely unelectrified.
