Google Earth and Google Maps published updated satellite imagery this week showing widespread destruction across Gaza, with Rafah and large parts of the strip reduced to rubble. The Independent reports the images show damage to the majority of housing, hospitals, schools, and buildings across the 141 square mile territory, with Bel Trew describing “torched ruins of once-bustling cities” and “monstrous teeth” ripping chunks from standing buildings. United Nations and WHO figures cited by The Independent and UNOSAT say about 82 percent of all structures and more than 90 percent of housing units have been damaged or destroyed, and the World Health Organization estimates 90 percent of hospitals are damaged or destroyed. A UN report cited that annual GDP per capita has fallen to $212 and 90 percent of working-age Palestinians are unemployed; only 1.5 percent of arable land is accessible and agricultural and industrial activity are down 94 percent. The Independent says there is an estimated 60 million tonnes of debris across Gaza, just one fully functioning digger to clear rubble, and at least 1,129 bodies recovered from under rubble remain unnamed. The updated images have prompted renewed humanitarian concern and echoed recent UN calls for full access for international investigators to document alleged violations, while the timing of Google’s update remains unclear and Google has been contacted for comment.
