Giants acquire QB J.J. McCarthy from Vikings for 2027 fifth-round pick

The New York Giants acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings on Monday in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick, a deal the teams say is pending McCarthy passing a physical. McCarthy was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft but lost the Vikings' starting job to Kyler Murray and fell to third on the depth chart behind Carson Wentz. In 10 starts last season McCarthy completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and he added 181 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. The Vikings cited a rookie season lost to injury and inconsistent play; McCarthy missed 24 of 34 possible games in his first two NFL seasons. New York made the move after starter Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2, with Jameis Winston taking over and starting the team’s recent games, including a 12-7 win over Tennessee in which he completed 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards. The trade gives the Giants a young quarterback on a rookie deal to compete behind or potentially replace Winston, and gives Minnesota a draft pick and roster flexibility while moving on from a former first-round selection.
