Bird of the Day, theme 'Seabirds'

natureSep 27, 202625611,949

Today's Bird of the Day is a daily community event with the theme #Seabirds, any bird found at sea or the coast, and an alternate theme #Airborne, any bird in flight. Participants are sharing coastal and pelagic subjects photographed in situ, including gannets and terns in flight, shorebirds like redshank and black turnstone, and sea specialists such as puffins, albatrosses, and shearwaters. Standout gallery entries include a Northern Gannet in flight, an Atlantic Puffin on the Isle of Mull, and a Black-footed Albatross off the coast of Newport, Oregon.

🪶 Good Morning Everybody and Happy Sunday! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Seabirds; any bird found at sea or the coast Alt. is #Airborne; any bird in flight. - A Northern Gannet in flight #birds #ECK #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #SuperSeaBirdSunday #Stunday

A Nothern Gannet in flight across the sky. The bird is centre of the shot, to the right slightly and flying from right to left.
It has a long pointed bill which is blue-grey in colour. Its black skin can be seen around the bill and eye. It has a yellowish colouration around the head and neck and a snowy white body. The outer half of its wings, which are in a downbeat, are black.
The sky is a blend of blue and white, out of focus and featureless

Typical Florida view along the coast for #BirdofTheDay, #Pelican. The Alt theme is #Airborne, any bird in flight. #Seabirds #birds #nature #wildlife #Florida #beach #ECK #thelittlethings #photography

A brown pelican is standing on top of a pole with ropes attached. There’s a sign on the pole that reads, Danger Keep Off. The ocean is blue and the sky is light blue with some light pink clouds.

Interesting information :
The brown pelican is the smallest of the six different species of pelicans in the world. This species can reach a length of 48 inches (121.9 centimeters) with an 84-inch (213.4 centimeters) wingspan. The brown pelican is a large grayish-brown bird with a distinct pouched bill. During the breeding season, the plumage (feathers) turns bright yellow on the head and white on the neck, which both fade to dull yellow and brown during non-breeding. Juvenile birds are almost completely brown with a whitish belly.
The brown pelican is a seabird, spending most of its time on or near the ocean. This species feeds on fish and has a very unique way of foraging. Unlike other pelicans species who work in flocks to corral their prey, brown pelicans dive headfirst into the water from heights as great as 50 feet (15.2 meters) to scoop up fish near the surface. Once they capture the fish, they tip their head upward or to the side to drain the water from their bill pouch. Though it looks as if the pelican submerges itself in the water during the dive, they usually remain on or near the surface of the water.
The brown pelican breeds in large colonies of several hundred pairs. These colonies can be found in trees or bushes usually on estuarine islands. In Florida, pelicans nest mostly in mangroves. Courtship involves the male swaying their head to attract a female mate.

So, I'm hearing that the #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Airborne Any bird in flight Great Horned Owl Desert Museum Tucson Raptor Free Flight

I was going to make up a story about how I waited for hours in a blind in the wilderness. But all I really did was buy a pass and wait in line for about a half hour. It's easier that way. Oh, and this was like the Nikon D700 or something.

Black turnstone taking off. #BirdOfTheDay #Seabirds #Airborne 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a black turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala) taking flight from a mussel-covered rock as surf rushes toward it, its wings spread, and water splashing beneath its yellow-orange legs and dripping from its talons. It's a small wading bird with a black-and-white barred pattern on its underwings, a dark brown mottled head and breast, and a bright white belly. Foamy surf churns in the background, with additional barnacle- and mussel-encrusted rocks framing the scene on a sunny afternoon.
