In a Meet the Press interview with Kristen Welker airing Sunday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence left unchecked could “cause a billion deaths” and urged US federal legislators and law enforcement to regulate AI. Gates said “no one thinks self-regulation is enough” and called for politicians and police to define safeguards and monitoring, adding regulation would be “a little bit of overhead for the industry” but not a dramatic slowdown. He repeated that AI in the wrong hands is “certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths.” The interview follows a nearly 6,000-word essay Gates published in late August that raised similar existential concerns. Gates noted fellow tech leaders including Sam Altman and Elon Musk have joined calls for slowing AI development, while Microsoft has faced internal and activist pressure over its technology’s use by the Israeli military and by US agencies. An external review released in July found Gates and other foundation leaders together held about 30 meetings with Jeffrey Epstein between 2011 and 2014; Gates has said he regretted those meetings and remains chair of the $89bn Gates Foundation. Gates pressed Washington to lead on enforceable AI rules and monitoring rather than rely on industry self-policing.
