Werwulf trailer debuts, Robert Eggers’ medieval werewolf film set for Christmas Day

Universal and Focus Features released a haunting new trailer for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf, a medieval werewolf film set in bleak, mystic England. The footage emphasizes Eggers’ washed-out, old-school horror aesthetic, authentic Old English dialogue, and gruesome injury detail. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as a farmer afflicted by the werewolf curse, Lily-Rose Depp plays his wife, Bodhi Rae Breathnach plays their daughter, and Willem Dafoe appears as a seasoned wildlife hunter; Ralph Ineson also returns as a frequent Eggers collaborator. Eggers co-wrote Werwulf with Sjón and produces alongside Focus Features and Universal Pictures; Chris and Eleanor Columbus serve as executive producers. Werwulf opens in U.S. cinemas on Christmas Day and in the U.K. on New Year’s Day.

I wonder how werewolf he’s going to be in this. Are we talking Jack Nicholson in Wolf, David Naughton in American Werewolf, or……*sigh*…………Christopher Abbott in Wolf Man (2025)?

Ok, I'm not a fan that they are doing again the "medieval peasants were dirty" cliche, and also witch stuff in the 13th century, but I can't deny that I am hyped about this movie. It seems that the "werwulf" is actually going to be beast like! www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL1E...

Lorris Chevalier, historical advisor, on WERWULF being deeply rooted in medieval thought: “Robert Eggers showed me 12 minutes of the movie. And I’m still having nightmares about it. It’s been 9 months. It’s gonna be a great piece.”

The dialogue of #Werwulf is in Middle English, and Robert Eggers candidly breaks down the process of writing such lines, and how he and Sjón balanced authenticity with relatability.

At yesterday’s sold out @beyondfest.bsky.social ‘A Decade of Decay: A Robert Eggers Marathon,’ the filmmaker talked about having to trust his instincts for nailing the tone of THE LIGHTHOUSE (2019) + worrying that Robert Pattinson & Willem Dafoe were almost *too* funny 😅
