Bird of the Day, theme 'Pairs'

Bird of the Day is a daily community event whose theme today is Pairs, asking for photos that show two of the same bird species. Submissions include a range of field and backyard shots, plus an alternate theme of Green for images with green backgrounds. Look for a pair of juvenile Barn Owls photographed in a church belfry in South Wales, a twofer of Puffins with green behind them, sandhill cranes making a flyby, and Great Egrets hunting before dawn. Other gallery entries show swans on the River Wey, a pair of Oyster Catchers, and young barn swallows interacting at a nature area.

#BirdOfTheDay theme is #Pairs Scarlet tanagers I found about 7 years ago at what I can best describe as wooded area behind a dump site/junkyard for the county road department.

Two male scarlet tanagers perched on branches in the midst of emerging spring leaves. Both birds are brilliant red with black wings and tail and are more or less facing the camera.

The junkyard. Turned out to be excellent birding with tanagers, orioles, rose-breasted grosbeaks, chestnut-sided warblers, and more. Whodathunkit?

They started coming to my suet feeder this year. Never seen them before. I was told they don't normally visit feeders, especially not the females but in a drought year they probably had to get creative about their dinners.

One year we had one land on the shepherds hook right outside the window. My son, 10yo at the time, said, “ Wow, what’s wrong with that cardinal?”😂

These are so cool. I learned about tanagers today when someone posted a pic of a glistening green tanager, then I started looking at others and found out about these red and black ones.

A pair of fledgling wrens perched on branches in the forest. The birds are either side of the centre of the shot, both facing the camera but turned slightly towards the left so that their left sides are showing. Both birds are quite round in shape with their tails standing up behind them. They have slender, yellow beaks with a large mouth gape. They are brown, darker on the back than on the underparts. They have white stripe above the eyebrow and the wings and tail have delicate barring. The one on the right is perched on the end of a small, cut branch while the one on the right is straddling two branches, one of which continues up between the birds in the foreground. Another couple of branches can be seen behind the bird in the right. The background is an out of focus green from the forest vegetation

Good morning. Today's #BirdoftheDay is #Pairs -- two of the same species in one photo. Here is an adult and juvenile Pileated woodpecker from #StanleyPark, #Vancouver, 7/2026. #Birds #Nature #Photography

Clinging to the bark of a vertical tree trunk is a juvenile black woodpecker. S/he has a white face with a black eye stripe and a black stripe from the corner of her mouth. We see her in profile. Her crown is standing up and is pink. The background is blurry, leafy tree branches in the distance. Appearing just behind the young one is an adult's head peering around the corner. We see the more defined black stripes on a white face, a pointy matte-black bill, and the hint of the brilliant red crest. We also see the yellow eye clearly, in contrast to the simple black eye on the young one.
