Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told the United Nations Security Council that artificial intelligence could become a risk to humanity if left unmanaged, with Amodei saying, “If managed poorly, I even believe AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole,” and Altman warning, “We could lose control of the future to AI.” The briefing included Canadian AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio and framed the moment as requiring “extreme care,” according to Altman, who spoke at an emergency session. The executives asked governments to set coordinated global safeguards and regulations because companies alone cannot ensure safety as systems grow more powerful. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband endorsed that view at the meeting, saying national action cannot be left to the companies alone. The UN session followed weeks of public concern about advanced AI and pushed the Security Council discussion toward international cooperation on limits and oversight.
