Hackers say they stole thousands of FBI personnel records

newsSep 23, 2026222,718

The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters says it exfiltrated thousands of FBI personnel records and posted a message claiming “We have compromised the FBI,” addressing Kash Patel and Brett Leatherman. Journalists at The New York Times, Politico and 404 Media say they examined samples containing thousands of purported FBI records, with one report citing a sample affecting about 5,000 supposed FBI agents. The samples reportedly include names, addresses and family information and, according to 404 Media reporting, appear to expose members of the FBI’s Remote Operations Unit. The FBI says it is aware of the claims, that the matter involves its jobs portal, and that it is investigating a possible breach. Security experts and reporters cited in coverage warned the data, if genuine, could pose safety and counterintelligence risks for current and former personnel and applicants.

NEW: Yesterday, 404 Media broke news of the FBI breach. Now, we've discovered it has exposed the FBI's own hacking unit. The FBI's Remote Operations Unit (ROU) is a highly secretive team of hackers making exploits and tools to break into target’s devices. Some of its members just got exposed.
