AP: ICE stops publishing locations for thousands of detainees with final removal orders

The Associated Press reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stopped publishing location information for most detainees who have final orders of removal, removing them from the agency’s Online Detainee Locator System. Current and former officials told AP the change was unannounced and began on September 15. Several immigration lawyers confirmed their clients vanished from the locator with no notice or explanation, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association warned members about the development. Greg Chen of the American Immigration Lawyers Association said families are "freaking out" because they fear loved ones have been deported and attorneys cannot reach clients. Advocates and lawyers say the removal of location data makes last-minute legal challenges and routine contact between detained people and their counsel or relatives far more difficult.

NEW: @apnews.com confirms that ICE has begun electronically "disappearing" people in the agency's custody who have final orders of removal. As of last week, anyone jailed by ICE with a final order of removal will NOT appear in the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, making them effectively vanish.
