Meta blocks Barcelona theatre ads for Virginia Woolf play over 'social topics' filter

Teatre Raval in Barcelona was blocked from promoting its stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own on Facebook and Instagram after Meta’s automatic system flagged mentions of “civil rights, feminism or social reform” as “social topics.” The newly reopened theatre, which seats 193, was told any text that appears to encourage activism is filtered out and Meta recommended removing key words to allow the publicity to run. The one-woman production stars Clara Sanchis and adapts Woolf’s 1928 Newnham and Girton lectures, published as an essay in 1929 about women’s access to education and social position. The Guardian reports Woolf wrote that “a woman must have money and a room of her own” and that she expected to be attacked as a feminist for her arguments. Sanchis told La Vanguardia the rejection may be due to Woolf’s name, the word feminism, or both and called the filter “a way of erasing from the map advances that have taken centuries to achieve.” Meta’s action left the theatre without the social media publicity it said it needs to make audiences aware of cultural activities.
