Super El Niño smashes temperature records months before expected peak

scienceSep 21, 2026391,643

The equatorial Pacific El Niño anomaly has reached 3.05C, exceeding the 3.02C peak recorded in late November 2015 and doing so several months before the event’s expected peak. The preferred rolling 30-year metric, ONI, is about 0.01C below the 2015 record, and an average of 14 climate models compiled by Zeke Hausfather now forecast a November, December peak near 4.0C, a level Hausfather called "mind-blowing" and others described as "Godzilla-level." Scientists say this El Niño is likely the largest in at least 1,000 years and will add heat to an atmosphere already warmed by fossil fuel emissions, making 2027 poised to become the hottest year on record. Experts warn the event will intensify extreme weather and human impacts already emerging: Indonesia is experiencing record wildfires and hazardous air pollution, India has seen curtailed monsoon rains, parts of Central America and the Caribbean face drought and Panama Canal low water, and Peru and Chile are suffering heavier rains and flooding that have disrupted access to Machu Picchu. The World Food Programme estimated in August that El Niño could push about 50 million people into acute hunger. Climate scientists Friederike Otto and Zeke Hausfather emphasized that this redistribution of energy on a hotter baseline will produce never-before-experienced heat extremes with concrete consequences for health, food security, and water stress.

This year’s El Niño is on course to be the largest in at least *1,000* years. That’s going to drive excess heat into the atmosphere and combined with man-made heating will make 2027 the hottest year ever recorded. #climatecrisis

The current El Niño is likely to be the largest in at least 1,000 years and will pile extra heat into an atmosphere in which temperatures are already rising rapidly due to human-caused global heating. This double whammy means 2027 is expected to become the hottest year ever recorded.

So mass mobilization time? Tell your friends and family. Get everyone on board. It seems like an insurmountable battle because we're not all talking about it to each other

I have zero faith that most Canadian politicians are taking this seriously or preparing for it in any significant way.

well you see this is a small price to pay for giving computers anxiety and cranking the cost of everything by 50%

at the risk of repeating myself, every year that ticks by without a worldwide revolution to stop the corporations and capitalists who are doing this to the world means millions more dead in the future voting not only isn't harm reduction, but enabling the perpetuation of the deadly status quo

Clearly, the only solution is to quickly build more data centers so AI can solve climate change 🚀🚀🚀

60-something years ago, my grandfather called my grandmother and told her he’d been offered a job. Would she rather move to Jacksonville, FL, or Chicago, IL? It was winter in Tuscaloosa, their heat was broken, and she had three little kids. And that’s why I was eventually born in Florida.

I hate my Prime Minister.

Well, this should be fun. Good thing we at least have top notch government services here like FEMA and NOAA to...yeah, I can't. We're cooked.

El Nino makes the extremes of wet and dry even worse. Follow @weatherprof.bsky.social and @climateguyw.bsky.social for daily details.

Again, it's both a near-certainty that 2027 is going to be global climate bedlam and that we likely don't have the political wherewithal to mitigate it before the Northern Hemisphere summer. I questioned even sharing this, but ultimately I hope it's slightly better to understand and expect it.
