Guardian: Saudi oil scientists worked on IPCC reports

scienceSep 21, 202616720

The Guardian revealed that at least a dozen IPCC lead authors are employed by or linked to Saudi Aramco, Saudi institutions and other oil and gas interests, and that one IPCC vice-chair is a Saudi government employee representing the kingdom at global climate negotiations. The paper examined the 223 lead authors of working group III, which assesses emissions-reduction options, and identified 20 cases with strong conflict-of-interest concerns. Prof Julia Steinberger recalled meeting Mustafa Babiker, an Aramco staffer appointed as a coordinating lead author for the Seventh Assessment Report, and the investigation notes Babiker had declared his employment on IPCC forms. Another Aramco employee, Dr Diego Armando Moya Pinta, is listed by the IPCC only as affiliated with Imperial College London despite working at Aramco since 2022 and serving as a lead author on the energy systems chapter. Experts who reviewed the Guardian’s investigation said the IPCC’s conflict-of-interest policy is "not fit for purpose." The findings raise concrete questions about potential industry influence on WGIII assessments of technologies and policies for cutting emissions and have prompted calls for stronger disclosure and conflict-management rules within the IPCC.

some staggering quotes in this piece, including the claim by one IPCC scientist that sinply declaring funding from Saudi Aramco resolves any conflict of interest

JFC 🤯 "At least a dozen IPCC lead authors are employed by or linked to Saudi Aramco, Saudi institutions and other oil and gas interests [..] One IPCC vice-chair, part of the body’s leadership group, also represents the kingdom at global climate negotiations as a government employee."

Annie Leymarie12

Of the 223 lead authors in the IPCC working group III (mitigation of climate change), an investigation found 20 with strong conflict of interest concerns. "Authors’ conflict of interest declarations are not made public, & the conflict of interest committee provides no detail about its deliberation."

Questions raised by this @theguardian.com investigation into @ipcc.bsky.social go right up to #ProfJimSkea "IPCC said there was no process currently under way to amend its conflict of interest policy" That needs to change, Jim, fast @ciel.org @georgemonbiot.bsky.social @rupertread.bsky.social

CoI is subjective but I do agree that this is not s good look for the IPCC.

FIFA sponsor Saudi Aramco. Breaking the Saudi oil ties should be a priority for any new FIFA boss.

Leonid Schneider5

Totally unfair. Why no Gazprom experts on IPCC?

Silvia Lazzaris4

Our investigation on the IPCC’s conflict of interest policy is out

This is the most extraordinary controversy in the history of climate science. An indictment of the IPCC’s culture and systems. I hope this team looks at the anthropocene vote next.
