Orville Peck releases 'Mule', a personal album about addiction

Orville Peck released Mule, a 13-track album that chronicles his 2023 struggles with addiction, loss, and recovery. The Edited Press Release called Mule a sweeping, chronological epic narrativizing the year 2023, while a Tinnitist review highlighted Peck’s unmasked, intimate songwriting that incorporates bluegrass and alt-country. Peck says the title track Mule references the animal as an offspring of a horse and donkey, trapped between worlds and emblematic of stubborn resilience. Songs trace a loose timeline: Big 'Ol House finds him alone in Los Angeles, Rehab Blues details relapse and denial, Ring The Bell tells messy embarrassment, and The Fall depicts rock bottom one night in downtown New York. Cowboy Heart opens with Peck walking Hollywood Boulevard amid success yet feeling lost, and War Of The Worlds presents a sober, layered vocal take on the artist versus the self. Critics say the record rewards repeated listens for its melodies, harmonies, and storytelling, and Peck is promoting the album with live dates this week.
