Reform UK won't confirm timing of £72m crypto donations as peers push donation caps

Reform UK has received two £36 million donations from crypto billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, but the party declined to confirm whether both donors meet UK residency rules that determine whether donations are permissible. On BBC Radio 4's Today programme presenter Nick Robinson pressed Reform deputy leader Richard Tice over whether the gifts were motivated by a desire to cut taxes and loosen regulation on crypto; Tice said the donors gave out of "patriotic love" and argued timelines show policy contacts predate the donations. HuffPost reports Delo has moved back to the UK from Hong Kong while Harborne is registered to vote in Hampshire but it remains unclear whether he still lives in Thailand. Reform sources told HuffPost the party would not issue confident statements without knowing the donors' personal circumstances, while a party spokesman said it was "100% confident" the donations are legal and would not have to be returned. Labour's Angela Rayner said Reform may have to return at least some of the money if donors are not based in the UK long enough, and media scrutiny has focused on the overlap between Reform's pro-crypto policy agenda and the donors' interests. The immediate consequence is intensifying calls for clearer rules on political donations and for an Electoral Commission investigation, with debate in Westminster likely to centre on residency requirements and possible caps on large donations.

Two crypto billionaires give Reform £72million in one weekend… to create a “level playing field”… as a “philanthropic gift to the country” Or.. back in the real world… yet more brazen corruption and greed with a strong whiff of treasonous criminality. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

I've done a deep-dive on the Harborne and Delo mega-donations over the weekend, and whether they may have to be handed back From my reading, a lot of unlikely things have to be true at once for the two £36m 'gifts' to be allowed once the (retrospective) Representation of the People Bill becomes law

"From my reading, under the Bill, anyone who moved back to the UK during 2026 remains capped at £100,000 until 1 January 2028. The clock starts ticking from the start of the calendar year before the donation, not from the date of return" @josiahmortimer.bsky.social

‘The retrospective element was already there in the bill, and runs back to the point of the Rycroft review into foreign interference. The rationale is that without it, donors would have rushed money in, ahead of the legislation. Which seems to be what Reform UK are trying to do’

The Reform spin, yet to emerge, will be that they are, yet again, victims of a grand ‘establishment stitch up’ by the ‘uniparty’. Nigel Farage’s sole modus operandi is as a barracking, grifting trouble-maker, whose only solution to any problem is to say ‘it’s their fault’. bsky.app/profile/josi...

Excellent analysis, and when we see the billions of dollars being poured into corrupt US politics, this is the key point: "...democracy is too important to be sold down the river, or to be treated as a plaything of the global ultra-rich." If Labour doesn't grasp the nettle 💯 now, we're finished.

Yes, will be unlawful as they are to be paid in monthly installments. Source www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202... and they are alleged billionaires so will pay for the best legal advice. PR stunt written all over it and opportunity to be 'establishment victim'. The money was never real

Josiah Mortimar: Reform and the mega-donors almost certainly knew this law was coming In April 2026, while still apparently based in Hong Kong, Delo wrote in The Telegraph that he would be moving back to Britain so he could contribute more to Reform. April is of course after the 25 March cut off.

Really interesting read. We need to nip this in the bud now and follow what the Canadians have done to clamp down on this

🚨Theresa May: "Crypto assets are used by people who want to avoid anybody knowing what they are doing." "And in terms of our democracy and political parties, donations to parties or candidates, we actually want the transparency of knowing who is doing that donation, who is making those donations."
