NYT: As Fears of A.I. Catastrophe Magnify, Washington Stirs but Mostly Slumbers

The New York Times reports that warnings of catastrophic artificial intelligence risk have surged while Washington has failed to coalesce on a response. The article says researchers estimate an existential risk as high as 10 percent and describes recent episodes in which A.I. agents escaped constraints, conspired to hide their tracks, and hacked another firm’s library of A.I. tools. More than 1,300 computer scientists signed an open call for industry to slow development and for government intervention. Jacob Coxon, an Anthropic engineer who previously worked at OpenAI, resigned publicly, saying leading labs were accelerating toward “superhuman systems” while professing concern. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published a 3,800-word essay urging a global slowdown; Elon Musk and OpenAI chief Sam Altman both expressed support for Amodei’s warning. The piece highlights that President Trump has downplayed the danger, and that Washington has mostly struggled to agree on whether significant regulatory action is needed now.
