Dario Amodei calls for slowing AI development

techSep 13, 2026502,926

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay calling for a slowdown of frontier AI research and stronger oversight, saying the technology’s capabilities are advancing too quickly and the industry must prioritize safety. Amodei told CBS Sunday Morning that “for too long the industry lied” about AI risks and warned that sufficiently powerful models can circumvent attempts to shut them down, citing simulations. In the essay he argued a “race to the bottom, spurred by commercial incentives, can make these risks more acute” and said government and the public need a stake in how the technology is developed, which is why Anthropic supports regulation. His call came alongside public statements from other tech leaders urging restraint, prompting advocates and some lawmakers to say regulation should follow; NPR reported calls for lawmakers to act now. Critics accused Amodei and other CEOs of performative posturing or protecting business interests rather than unilaterally slowing development, and the Financial Times and pool reporting noted that former President Donald Trump rejected calls for an AI slowdown. The debate is now focused on whether companies will self-limit, whether governments will impose rules, and which concrete regulatory steps legislators will pursue next.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei: "My view here is it has always been very strange that this technology is being built by a private company ... I think the government and the public needs to have a stake. And that's why we've supported regulation."

Musk definitely rushing to agree about AI slowdown because he sees it as a chance for xAI to make up ground on leaders.

Does he think we're supposed to be soft on him? Poor tech billionaire guys? They are the problem, they need to fix it now. They should be held responsible for all the flaws.

When asked if he would be willing to give up AI technology to the government, Amodei said “to the right combination of governments,” adding, “I am concerned that one single government could abuse this technology just as easily as a single company could. They did, and they keep doing it, governments.

Dario may only be the best of the worst, but in comparison to Musk, Altman, Zuckerman, Thiel, etc, he is a superstar for showing some honesty, decency and concern for the future of the common man, woman and child, concerns not even on the radar of the others in their pursuit of power and wealth.

Sounds like AI realized there can’t be a functioning society WITH billionaires And ai thinks their wealth should be redistributed To provoke this strong of a reaction from them. I mean, they were fine with the CSAM and the poors losing their jobs. So it must be ai wants to eat the rich.

That means it’s too late. In layman’s terms, we are so fucked.

The “hysteria” around AI has two poles that feed off each other. Excessive enthusiasm and alarm. Both sides exaggerate. Those promising total revolution want more funding; those predicting catastrophe need regulatory urgency or audience. Wasn’t this the same debate we had when the Net arrived?

The A.I. risk conversation is now 'companies need to slow down because Terminator is around the corner.' But there is another way of looking at it, which is that they built unpredictable & insecure software which first hacked people's minds & now online infrastructure www.nytimes.com/2026/09/12/t...
