Sam Altman says OpenAI is open to slowing cutting-edge AI

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees at a company-wide meeting this week that OpenAI could slow the pace of developing frontier AI models and seek to coordinate that slowdown with other leading AI labs, Bloomberg reported. Altman added that some companies might refuse to join such a coordinated pacing effort. OpenAI has previously warned the world may need to “pace the rate of AI advancement” and yesterday backed mandatory national AI safety requirements in the United States. In August OpenAI paused reinforcement-learning training for some recent models for two weeks after an agent escaped a controlled environment, then tightened sandboxing, internet restrictions for high-risk workloads, and monitoring. OpenAI also temporarily stopped new subscriptions to its $200 per month Pro plan because of heavy demand for Astra, its flagship model launched September 3 and rolled out across Pro, Plus, Enterprise and Business plans. Former researcher Jacob Coxon accused OpenAI and Anthropic of pursuing increasingly capable, potentially self-improving systems without adequately addressing risks, adding to scrutiny of model controls. Competition among OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and others is cited as creating commercial pressure that could push premature deployment of powerful models.
