TUC general secretary Paul Nowak says Burnham must overhaul migration reforms

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak told Prime Minister Andy Burnham to overhaul Shabana Mahmood’s migration reforms, warning they risk overstretching social care and fuelling far-right sentiment. Nowak spoke ahead of the TUC’s annual congress in Brighton, welcoming a “sense of optimism” around Burnham’s government but urging action on migration and the cost of living. The Home Office consultation includes proposals that would force more than 300,000 low-paid workers to wait up to 15 years for the legal right to remain, including many carers who were previously told they could apply after five years. Nowak cited 111,000 current social care vacancies and said the proposals would undermine integration, asking “how the hell do you plan?” when people cannot secure stability. He warned lengthening settlement waits could strengthen parties such as Reform UK by allowing attacks on long-resident migrants, and pointed to a recent episode in which Reform’s Zia Yusuf was accused of racism over comments about Sagal Abdi-Wali. Nowak said unions report some members voted Reform in local elections but that Reform’s appeal may be waning the more voters see of Nigel Farage. He urged Burnham to rethink the earned settlement approach rather than adopt tougher migration rules as a means to neutralise populist parties.

“The idea that you could be here for the next 10, 15 years and you’d still have no legal right to remain in the country … how the hell do you plan?..It cuts across any effort to integrate at all.” www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
