Liverpool rallied at Anfield to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 in their Champions League opener. Marcos Llorente put Atlético ahead with a 17th-minute goal after a simple ball split Liverpool’s defence. Dominik Szoboszlai levelled on 40 minutes with a scrappy equaliser following sustained Liverpool pressure. Ten minutes into the second half Alexis Mac Allister hammered a left-footed shot from the edge of the box past Jan Oblak to make it 2-1. Bradley Barcola made his first Liverpool start but left the game with a knock and was replaced as Iraola made a double change that also brought on Munoz and Frimpong. Koumas and Tsimikas later came on and Koumas forced a strong save as Liverpool saw out the win. The victory was Iraola’s Champions League debut as Liverpool continue to show attacking consistency, having now scored two goals in each of their opening four matches under the new manager.
