Canada Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods

financeSep 8, 2026743,152

Ottawa has imposed retaliatory duties on U.S. imports worth roughly 20 billion to 28 billion dollars, matching Washington’s recent tariffs dollar for dollar and rate for rate. The measures, enacted by order in council and taking effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, apply to hundreds of items, one report lists 629 tariff lines including clothing, home appliances, metals and electronics. Canada framed the duties as a response to President Trump’s 50 percent tariffs announced on August 22. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will stand up for its interests and remains willing to negotiate a deal when the United States is ready, while former prime minister Jean Chrétien endorsed the counter-tariffs and did not rule out expanding them. Reporters and analysts warn the move pushes the trade confrontation into an escalatory phase with consequences for cross-border supply chains and U.S. consumers, and U.S. political fallout for Republicans in northern border states. Next steps include potential further tariff rounds from either side and renewed pressure on negotiators to return to talks to prevent deeper economic disruption.

1. Hilarious he needs "a source within the administration" to work out basic percentages of publicly available numbers. 2. No one in Canada thinks targeted retaliatory tariffs will destroy the US economy. 3. Trade policy is politics first, economics 7th, and for Trump the politics of this sucks.
