PISA 2025 finds widespread declines; Spain posts worst-ever result

educationSep 8, 202635747

The OECD released PISA 2025 showing widespread declines and Spain recording its worst-ever results. Spain contributed about 30,000 students and fell in all three domains: science, reading and mathematics. In science Spain scored 5 points below the OECD average and 4 points below the EU average, and its science performance dropped 16 points between 2015 and 2025, more than double the international average. Reading is the steepest fall: Spain lost 45 points over the last decade versus a 27-point OECD decline. Spain scored 457 in mathematics, six points below the OECD and EU averages, with a 29-point drop since 2015 compared with a 22-point global decline. PISA flagged an unexpected pattern: students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds in Spain fell two to three times more than other students, a result Abelardo de la Rosa, Spain's secretary of state for education, called surprising and said will be analysed. The OECD and national reports show the decline is broadly international since 2015 while countries such as Finland remain well above the OECD average in science; Spanish regional results put Madrid and Castilla y León above the international average and Ceuta and Melilla at the bottom of the national ranking.
