NYT: Documents show officials misled New Yorkers on 9/11 air quality

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released more than 170,000 pages of records this week that, according to a New York Times report, show city and federal officials reassured the public the air around Ground Zero was safe even though tests and internal reports indicated otherwise. The newly public files include health and environmental documents that suggest asbestos and other hazards persisted in Lower Manhattan for months, with health officials still finding asbestos as much as half a mile away ten months after the attacks. Mamdani said the records show people were told to return to the area before it was safe, and the administration published the first batch of files on a free online portal at nyc.gov/sept11docs. The release coincided with the city settling two 9/11 Health Watch lawsuits, and Mamdani announced the documents to advocates including Jon Stewart and family members of victims. Critics and former officials named in coverage include then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and former EPA director Christine Todd Whitman, whose public assurances about air safety are singled out by the records. Congressman Jerrold Nadler is quoted as saying he suspected officials prioritized reopening Wall Street over resident safety. Reporters and advocates note that many people have since died of illnesses linked to post-9/11 exposures, a toll some say exceeds the day-of fatalities.

They published this the same day they published the news that Mamdani's office is releasing to the public thousands of documents showing Giuliani's office knew how toxic the air was around Ground Zero and lied about it, leading to more deaths than on 9/11.

New records released today tell us Rudy Giuliani knew the air at Ground Zero was dangerous but lied to New Yorkers. People died because of this. Yet no right wing media outlet will ask him about it abcnews.com/US/nyc-mayor...

Zohran Mamdani released 170K documents revealing that post-9/11 asbestos levels remained dangerous for months, despite officials saying the air was safe. As we saw at the start of COVID, officials still treat essential workers as expendable. This is a long-overdue step in the right direction.

What NYC Mayor Mamdani just did for 9/11 first responders & residents living/working in the area where the twin towers fell is more than any single politician has ever done to help them. www.cnn.com/2026/09/08/u...
