Bird of the Day, theme 'Pigeons' (alt 'SittingOnWater')

natureSep 6, 202624112,441

Bird of the Day is a daily community prompt; today Rob Crank set the themes as #Pigeons and the alt theme #SittingOnWater. The gallery today spotlights city and exotic pigeons alongside water-bound birds, with images ranging from headshots and perches to birds floating or stretching on ponds. Standout entries include a Pacific Emerald Dove, a Victoria crowned pigeon headshot, and a Nicobar pigeon from Animal Kingdom, plus water scenes like a Clark's Grebe stretching a leg and Maurice the Mandarin duck sitting on water. Tag your post with #Pigeons or #SittingOnWater to join the feed.

SunSpirit4551

For those unfamiliar, they are not born with the white feathers on the head, those come in at about 5 years old.

HankB1

Since we can't see the talons, at least we can admire the beak. And somehow "beak" seems insufficient. A cardinal has a beak. A pigeon has a beak. This young eagle has so much more. Nice shot - thanks!

One of the joys of my life is feeding pigeons from my hands. ❤️

Taffy Marlington2

Pigeons are absolutely gorgeous birds. I don't get why so many hate them. I suspect because they're city dwellers so they're perceived as 'dirty.' I love them.

I've never seen one like this before. Beautiful.

Rob has said today’s: “ #BirdOfTheDay themes are a simple pair today with #Pigeons, any Pigeon will do, and the Alt theme is #SittingOnWater, any bird/duck/goose/swan sitting on water.” #birds #photography #Stunday #ECK

A close-up portrait of a pigeon, showing its blue-grey plumage, iridescent green and purple feathers on the neck, distinctive orange-red eye, and dark beak. The bird faces right against a softly blurred green background.

Good morning, JB 😊 I rarely see any pigeons around here, maybe hiding under an overpass and scattering when cycling. I hope you are having a lovely day! 🥰🤗😘

#Birds #Ducks Rob Crank @robcrank68.bsky.social says today's #BirdOfTheDay Alt theme is #SittingOnWater, any bird/duck/goose/swan sitting on water. A Lesser Scaup hen appeared this week. Didn't see any at all this Spring, so I was very happy she stopped by on her migration south.

A brown duck with a grey bill & warm golden brown eye, faces left. The bird is floating on gently rippled water, reflecting the bird & light green, gold and, brassy tones.

Black-naped fruit-dove, native to The Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, for #BirdOfTheDay #Pigeons #eck 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a black-naped fruit-dove (Ptilinopus melanospilus) perched on a thin gray branch, facing the camera. It's an emerald green bird with a white head and just-visible black nape patch, yellow eyes, yellow beak, a bright orange throat, and orange and deep crimson-red coloring on the underside of its tail. The iridescent green feathers of its torso are puffed out, giving it a round appearance, and its feet grip the branch with maroon-red toes. The background is a soft, pale blue with more blurred branches.

HLK5

When I was a kid in The Philippines, I once found a fruit-dove with an injured wing and kept it in a potted tree on our deck for about a week till it flew away. I've never been able to find a bird that matches it exactly, in a book or online, although there are many species of green fruit-doves.

JoJaSciPo2

@aintright.bsky.social Ducks & grebes not v closely related, despite similarities. Ducks represented by the cockerel near right edge; grebes, immediately to the left of that, sister to flamingoes. Tree from Jarvis et al 2014, via my blog post: sciencepolice2010.wordpress.com/2014/12/16/b...

wizard prang2

Well. If I had such fancy feet I'd show them off too! I've only ever seen a pied-billed grebe, they're small & adorable but not super showy. Terrific photo. 🩵

Did I hear you have sunflower seeds? #BirdOfTheDay #Pigeons #birds #photography

This is a Band-tailed pigeon that likes the forests here in Southwest Washington. But it has a voracious appetite for seeds found on a platform feeder as well. It only shows up with its 20 or 30 closest friends. 😆

Thea (Learn Birds)1

Band-tailed pigeons always strike me as such handsome, understated birds. Nothing like that on our side of the Atlantic, though our woodpigeons would happily join the queue for sunflower seeds too.
