Anak Krakatau erupted for 30 seconds at 3:53 a.m. Sunday, sending volcanic ash over parts of western Indonesia and prompting Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta to suspend flight operations from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology said ash reached Jakarta and Lampung province while the volcano showed activity since Friday and produced visible lava flares on closed-circuit camera. Authorities reported no casualties and issued no evacuation order; they warned people to stay at least 3 kilometers from the active crater and noted the nearest settlement lies more than 16 kilometers away. The airport closure affected 209 flight movements and about 22,800 passengers, left 170 aircraft parked overnight, and disrupted routes to Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Amsterdam, Seoul, Doha and Kuala Lumpur, as well as domestic services to Lampung, Bali and Surabaya. Lukman F. Laisa, director general of civil aviation, said safety guides operational decisions and warned of cascading schedule impacts as airlines work to restore service. Authorities urged travelers to check with airlines for the latest flight information and to avoid the airport unless necessary while monitoring continues.
