Bindi Irwin marked the 20th anniversary of her father Steve Irwin's death on 4 September 2006 with a touching social media tribute calling him a "superhero" and saying his legacy is love as well as wildlife conservation. Steve Irwin died aged 44 after a stingray's barb pierced his chest while he was filming a documentary at the Great Barrier Reef. Bindi, who was eight when he died and is now 28, said she has "watched the world mourn my dad with our family" and described ongoing grief for her mother Terri and younger brother Robert, now 22. Bindi also said her five-year-old daughter watches Steve's documentaries every morning and feels connected to the grandfather she never met. Terri Irwin posted a clip of Steve recalling Bindi's birth and how the name came from his favourite crocodile, Bindi. Robert Irwin posted a photo of Steve holding him as a baby with the caption "Your legacy is forever" and last November won Dancing with the Stars in the US a decade after Bindi's win. The Irwin family continue to run Australia Zoo in Queensland and Bindi said Steve's impact will ripple out for generations.

20 years ago today I was shaken to my core when Steve Irwin died. 💔 The loss was unthinkable to me as a young adult. Suddenly, all the public science ed I'd been doing in the side as I pursued research? The enthusiasm kids responded to me with? I knew then. I had a call to answer. My life changed.

Aww. I spent 27 years working/living with Hollywood A-Listers and met too many celebs to count. The only 'celebrity' I really wanted to meet was Steve Irwin. I was devastated when my favorite 'crocco-doyle' hunter died but I'm happy he died doing what he loved. What an awesome, compassionate guy.

I was a huge fan of Steve Irwin in middle school, high school, and college. Even thought Detroit Zoo Reptile Curator could be a cool job to have. Remember sitting in my apartment living room in Oklahoma when the news about Steve came across. One of only a couple celebrity deaths that affected me.

I miss Steve Irwin and I'll tell you there would be far fewer blatant animal abuse slop reels on socials if he were still around. I think that we need more violently vocal, influential wildlife lovers. They are there but they usually stay within their bubble and don't bother people.
