Reps. Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez advance GOP rule

The House voted 220-192 to adopt a messaging resolution condemning socialism, an election-year move Republicans say will sharpen contrasts for November. Republicans added a call to pass the controversial SAVE America Act voter-ID bill to that resolution, which pushed some moderate Democrats away. The rule nearly failed in a preliminary vote after a small conservative rebellion, but Democratic Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington crossed the aisle to advance the measure. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said the package also targets noncitizen voting and that all of it is "on the ballot this November." Democrats called the measure a nonbinding stunt and moved an alternate resolution; House Democratic Caucus chair Rep. Pete Aguilar said Republicans were simply adding another talking point. The rule also contained a provision favorable to the lobster fishing industry, which Democratic leaders had cited as part of the vote calculus.
