Liberals sweep three federal byelections in Canada

The Liberal Party won all three federal byelections held Monday, taking Beaches, East York in Toronto with Tanveer Shahnawaz, winning North Vancouver, Capilano in British Columbia with Braeden Caley, and flipping Chicoutimi, Le Fjord in Quebec from Conservative hands. The Quebec gain was previously held by Conservative Richard Martel before his Senate appointment this summer, giving the Liberals a net gain of one seat and helping preserve Prime Minister Mark Carney's parliamentary majority. CBC called the trio of wins the Liberals' second byelection hat trick of the year. Braeden Caley framed his North Vancouver victory as a grassroots result, saying the campaign was built "one call, one door and one vote at a time," and Carney congratulated Caley as a former deputy chief of staff he looks forward to working with. CBC noted Liberal vote share slipped from 2025 highs in Beaches, East York and could finish slightly lower in North Vancouver, Capilano, while Conservative vote share declined in the contested ridings and will be a line of questioning for Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. Six more federal byelections are scheduled in the coming months, offering further tests for all parties.
