Manchester City have agreed a joint-British transfer record fee of £125 million to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, with the 25-year-old due to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract. The deal matches the £125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak and follows Fernandez's 2023 move to Chelsea from Benfica for a then-record £107 million. City and Chelsea reached agreement after 24 hours of negotiations; Chelsea set a 17:00 BST deadline on 14 August for offers of £120 million or more. City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernández at Chelsea, pushed for the signing after losing several midfielders this summer. Chelsea had been prepared to keep Fernández but the player pushed to leave and targeted a move to Real Madrid, which did not materialize. The transfer is Chelsea's second-biggest sale after Eden Hazard in 2019 and helps fuel a summer of Chelsea sales now expected to exceed £400 million, while marking City’s second time breaking their own transfer record this window after signing Elliot Anderson for £116 million.

Chelsea have literally spent billions rebuilding this squad, they apparently have the best attack anyone has ever seen, 2 out of the 3 nicely rested with no WC. They have a free run at it with no Europe & one game per week…Yet, it would be a huge shock to everyone if Arsenal don’t win the league.

The thing that Arsenal understand that none of these other clubs seem to is that defenders are still severely undervalued in this insane market. If you can only have one, an elite defensive structure will grind out results more consistently than superstar attackers. In the PL, at least.
