UK Greens call temporary ban on new data centres
Right now the government is putting our communities, our water security and our climate ambitions second to the demands of tech giants. It's time to slam the brakes on water-guzzling, energy hungry datacentres.
Temporary should be permanent. They screw the environment until there is nothing left
Yes, I saw one is planned for Bristol and our Green council had better block this. I mean really. This cannot happen.
Also we need to crush the gaslighting lie that data centres create jobs. They literally do the opposite.
The U.K. does not need them Yet Labour pushed for them, even though they will require lots of power and water , pollute , and won’t actually provide any real jobs Follow the money….
The key test should be simple: no approval without a binding plan for water use, electricity demand and who pays for the grid upgrades. “Digital” infrastructure still has very physical costs.
The UK has an estimated 477 to over 520 active data centres, with nearly 100 additional facilities currently planned or under construction Only second to America. Enough. they tell us to reduce/recycle, but these data centres will kill the planet.
In a world that is short of water and energy it is madness to build hundreds of new data centres www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
It is also important to keep in mind that although AI is currently offered freely to almost everyone, before long this service will also be turned into a profitable business; and then it will no longer benefit ordinary citizens in any way! Now, AI is freely offered for one reason only: to train AI.
I’d say so But then I’m not in with any gazillionaires who want to control the world and control what the world thinks, as we dive headlong into a dystopian nightmare
It absolutely is madness, which is why the government seem to be happy to sign them off and built all over the country. That bounce will very quickly deflate for the PM and the Labour Party.
I'd call for a PERMANENT ban!
Pretty much everyone is saying the same thing. But the tech bros don't seem to be listening... it would be nice to think they had our best interests at heart 😹
They’re flouting federal laws in the US and vacuuming up water and energy from local populations, and that’s besides poisoning the environment. Don’t want that here, no sir!
