Report: top Army general told to drop Kid Rock chopper probe before firing

musicAug 26, 2026314,089

Days before Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed Gen. Randy George as Army chief of staff on April 2, Gen. Chris LaNeve, the service’s No. 2 officer and a leading candidate to replace George, told George Hegseth did not want the Army to investigate an unauthorized Apache helicopter flyby of musician Kid Rock’s Tennessee estate on March 28, three people familiar with the matter said. George told colleagues he was troubled by LaNeve’s suggestion that the review be scuttled; George had wanted to determine whether any safety regulations were violated. Hegseth removed George without publicly explaining the decision, and through a spokesman George declined to comment. Hegseth issued a statement calling LaNeve “precisely the kind of leader the U.S. Army needs” and saying LaNeve is not interested in playing politics in Washington. The reporting says the episode adds a new layer to possible motivations for George’s ouster; others familiar with the firing say multiple factors, including George’s close working relationship with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, were likely involved. LaNeve’s candidacy for Army chief of staff faces resistance in Congress, and Army officials did not respond to questions about LaNeve.

Days before the Army’s top officer was abruptly fired earlier this year, he was advised by a fellow general now vying to replace him to stop the military’s investigation into an unauthorized helicopter flyby of musician Kid Rock’s Tennessee estate, three people familiar with the matter said.

Gen. Randy George, whom Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed as the Army chief of staff without explanation, felt it was important to follow typical protocol and determine whether any safety regulations had been violated during the March 28 flyby, these people said. Like some others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the episode.

Gen. Chris LaNeve, the Army’s No. 2 officer, told George that Hegseth did not want the investigation to proceed, one person said. The two others said that George later confided in colleagues that he seemed troubled by the encounter with LaNeve, who suggested it would be best if the review was scuttled.

Nice how the heads of the Army, Air Force, and Navy all got into their positions by selling out colleagues or appealing to MAGA culture war nonsense! Merit is back!

Worth saying that I’m sure this didn’t help George’s case for staying, but he’s more a casualty of the Pete-Driscoll civil war going on in the department atm

Whats that you say? Things can’t possibly get dumber? Hold Pete’s beer…

I think the last time the US Armed Forces was under any equivalent to the level of institutional attack it's currently under is either while losing the War of 1812, or else the *better* half of its own officer corps going rogue and defecting in 1860

your entire military career scuttled because some punk ass Faux News host who’s never even smelled a battlefield illegally orders a helicopter flown over a rock star’s house to show off for a politician holy shit I’d be incandescent

Trust Pete to be the brilliant strategist. Not.

I don't think firing someone for doing a routine investigation into flight safety protocols bodes well for the safety of flying in America actually.
