Mark Zuckerberg planned to replace thousands of Meta staff with AI, plan collapsed

Mark Zuckerberg pushed a plan to make Meta “AI native” that would have replaced much human work and cut many teams by as much as 60% in two waves, according to internal documents and an internal post titled "AI-Native Playbook." The proposal reorganized work into small pods with pooled specialists, typically 3, 4 builders (engineers), one direction lead and shared cross-functional specialists such as designers, UXR, data scientists and ML, and showed role descriptions and expectations for each role. Executives accelerated the effort after an April 30, 2026 town hall in which Zuckerberg described the reorganization, but the rollout collapsed when automated AI agents caused major technical and security incidents, including service disruptions and potential data leaks, and thousands of employees pushed back. Hours before the first layoff wave was to begin, senior leaders paused the cuts and told managers to frame the change as role evolution rather than immediate firing. Reuters’s investigation says the plan was quietly scaled back and senior executives discouraged broad discussion with rank-and-file employees while they reassessed how to integrate AI into workflows.
