Max Verstappen crashed into the concrete outside barrier at Zandvoort on the opening lap of the Dutch Grand Prix, sending his Red Bull back across the track, breaking off a wheel and scattering debris. Verstappen, who had started seventh, climbed out of the car unassisted and radioed to the team that he was OK. The incident occurred at the banked final corner on a damp track after rain before the start; Audi junior Gabriel Bortoleto spun behind Verstappen at the same corner and Nico Hulkenberg narrowly avoided contact. Four-time world champion Nico Rosberg told Sky Sports that Verstappen “put a bit too much throttle down” and that the sequence showed how difficult the conditions were. Race control stopped the Grand Prix with a red flag, cleared the debris and then restarted the race after an extra formation lap.
