Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2-1 to retain the UEFA Super Cup at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute for PSG. Seventeen-year-old Brian Madjo volleyed a 45th-minute equaliser, becoming the youngest scorer in Super Cup history on his Villa debut. Désiré Doué restored PSG's lead with a 62nd-minute winner that stood after a VAR offside check. Villa had been able to field Madjo only after winning a Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal following an eight-month registration ban; the club paid £10m to sign him from Metz in January. Omar Artan became the first non-European referee to take charge of the Super Cup, and Unai Emery suffered his fourth final defeat in this competition.
