OpenAI's hockey puck AI speaker reportedly over $300

Bloomberg reports OpenAI is building a doughnut-shaped, hockey-puck-sized ChatGPT speaker designed by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The battery-powered device will have speaker grilles, microphones, lights, moving parts to indicate responses, and a camera and sensors to gather environmental information, but it will not include a display. Bloomberg says the AI model will provide human-like voice responses and learn about users over time. The product will use a premium metal finish and is expected to cost roughly $300 to $400. The report notes OpenAI acquired Ive's io device startup and added former Apple design team members to its hardware group; Apple alleges in a trade-secrets lawsuit that OpenAI misled an Apple supplier about a metal finishing technique. OpenAI hopes to introduce the device later this year with a potential wider launch in 2027.
