Doug Burgum doubles down on Reflecting Pool vandalism claim

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended President Donald Trump’s insistence that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was vandalized, posting Saturday that "The evidence is clear, vandals have repeatedly caused damage to the Reflecting Pool" and saying the department supplied expert and eyewitness testimony to the U.S. Attorney's office. Burgum’s statement came after U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro withdrew the vandalism charge against ex-Olympian David Hearn and filed court papers attributing the pool lining damage to a "flawed installation by the contractor" and "the rush to complete the project." Trump wrote that he "disagree[s] 100% with Jeanine Pirro" and called the damage "a pure case of VANDALISM," including a claim the grass bore a large "86 47" marking; he posted a video he said showed people cutting the pool material with a knife or box cutter. The Reflecting Pool, part of the Lincoln Memorial and dating to 1922, is at the center of a public dispute between the Justice Department, the Interior Department, and the president, with Burgum vowing, "We won't back down to deranged people who want to destroy, deface, or degrade our monuments." The immediate consequence is an intra-administration clash that accompanied the dismissal of criminal charges and shifts blame between contractors and alleged vandals.
