Senior GOP staff warn of 'rabid' young Republican cohort

politicsAug 1, 2026182,026

Politico reports senior Republican congressional staffers and conservative insiders are alarmed that a new generation of aides prizes sycophancy over competence, with one anonymous senior staffer saying, “We have a generation of rabid, incompetent idiots.” Sources including four senior GOP staffers, think tank scholars, Heritage expats, academics and rising Republicans told Politico they fear the pipeline that supplies talent to Washington has collapsed under a Trumpist tilt toward loyalty. Reporters flagged the spread of “groypers,” followers of Nick Fuentes, and cited examples such as a young Trump administration lawyer whose texts admitted to a “Nazi streak” and social media posts from official accounts echoing far-right memes. Heritage-affiliated shifts toward MAGA priorities are named as a pull factor, while E.J. Fagan, an associate professor, pointed to social media habits and cited the case of E.J. Antoni, whose BLS nomination was rescinded after reports of a deleted X account. Young conservatives dispute the scale of groyper influence: Marty Bertao, president of the College Republicans of America, said “there is not this mass groyper issue,” and Rachel Bovard of the Conservative Partnership Institute said critics label anyone remotely anti-Israel as groyper. Politico warns that if Washington relies on staff shaped by these trends, the party’s ability to govern could be crippled over the next five to eight years.

Yeesh. Amazing quote in this story by Kathy Gilsinan: www.politico.com/news/magazin...

“Everyone knows what the problem is: The organizations that bring young staffers to Washington, D.C. have spent the last decade prioritizing blind ideological loyalty instead of competence or intelligence,” said a senior GOP congressional staffer, granted anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel issues. “We have a generation of rabid, incompetent idiots.”

“communications staff now outnumber policy staff in certain House and Senate offices — a reflection, they said, of members prioritizing “clicks and clapbacks in the ‘way too online’ corner of X”

Half a decade ago, @willsommer.bsky.social and I interviewed @pareene.bsky.social about his then-already years old column about how Charlottesville was a glimpse into the future of the GOP podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/f... ALEX’s take keeps on winning (sadly)

They don’t understand that it’s their ideology that birthed these incompetent idiots. People have been predicting this for decades.

Critics fear the thing that has already happened will happen: "But these critics fear a decline of merit and skill, along with a tolerance for darker ideologies that could cripple the party’s ability to govern in the long run."

I’m sure it has nothing to do with our decades-long assault on education, devaluing liberal arts, fostering suspicion of expertise, love of quacks, and underfunding schools.

If you’re worried the next generation of republicans are rabid, incompetent idiots, I have some bad news about the current generation of republicans.

The GOP has been preaching “meritocracy” but the only thing that merits inclusion is blind loyalty to Trump, which has led to recruits being fucking idiots.

Huh. Pretty crazy how that happened after elevating a rabid, incompetent idiot to Dear Leader status

part and parcel of the radicalism in question here is that right-of-center politics increasingly occurs primarily within the simulacrum of right-wing media spaces (online and traditional), apart from real-world governance demands

Seems like a clear case of reaping what you have sowed
