Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle United after five years in charge, with Al Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle poised to replace him. Howe, 48, who guided Newcastle to their first trophy in 70 years with the 2025 Carabao Cup, has told the club he wants to take a break from football; the split is described as amicable and Newcastle say they are well prepared. Howe was appointed in November 2021 when Newcastle sat 19th in the Premier League and subsequently secured top-flight safety, Champions League qualification via a fourth-place finish in 2022-23, and a top-five finish two seasons later. Last season saw a downturn: Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League, exited the Champions League at the last-16 stage after an 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona, and won five of 17 league games from January 7. Jaissle, 38, joined Al Ahli in 2023 after managing Red Bull Salzburg, where he won back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup; he has led Al Ahli to consecutive Asian Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026. Both clubs share majority ownership by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and talks between Newcastle and Jaissle are said to be at an advanced stage, with a managerial change expected in the coming days.

Personally, I feel for Newcastle fans. We are seeing a challenger club be completely dismantled, playing into the hands of the status quo. This could easily be Villa in the same position. Fortunately, Villa have been prepared for the raid and won't take it lying down. But how long for?

I feel for Eddie Howe. He's done a good job at Newcastle but has seen his team sold from underneath him. If sufficient funds weren't being made available to rebuild, he didn't really have much choice but to walk
