The San Francisco Giants placed utilityman Casey Schmitt on the injured list with a torn meniscus in his left knee after he strained the knee rounding first base in the second inning against the Milwaukee Brewers. The club announced Schmitt was placed on the 10-day injured list and is expected to miss the rest of the season. San Francisco called up infielder Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento to take Schmitt's roster spot. Schmitt had been enjoying a breakout year, with career highs in home runs (21), stolen bases (nine), RBI (55) and a .271 batting average, and he had been drawing trade interest from teams including the Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies. With several tradeable players hitting the injured list, and with Matt Chapman already sidelined with an abdominal strain, the Giants’ options ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline have narrowed, reducing the market for right-handed bats the Mariners sought.
